Description of program:ISP is an evidence-based, early intervention program that helps youth and their families access the appropriate supports and services, before they become involved in the judicial system. These services may include help with their mental well-being, addictions, developmental needs, parenting/family supports, and/or help within the education system.
Program duration:Average of 3-6 months
What to expect:1. First contact – Police respond to an incident, where the youth meets inclusion criteria. Police are now able to respond before having to wait until the youth is 12 years old to intervene. Consent is obtained from the parent/guardian before sending a referral to the ISP program.
2. Engagement screening – The ISP worker meets with the youth and their parent/guardian, to determine service pathways given their unique strengths and needs.
3. Intervention pathways – The worker refers the youth and their parent/guardian to specified agencies in the community, and stays connected with them during the referral process, until they are successfully engaged in services.
Discharge process:A discharge meeting is conducted to review the goals established during the intake, and determines whether they were adequately met. A file closure letter is sent to the youth and family outlining the services offered (declined or provided), along with an experience survey. A follow-up report is sent to the referring officer upon discharge, outlining the community referrals and connections made.
Referral process:Police
